Would you Climb a Mountain for Gold?

Skagway, a town that will grab hold of your heart and never let go.

When you walk its streets and learn its history, you begin to realize that the people who came here were a different breed altogether. They were strong, resilient, and brave. They endured hardships that most of us can barely imagine.

Before 1898, Skagway was little more than a quiet settlement. Only a handful of people called it home. Nestled between towering mountains and the waters of the Inside Passage, it was peaceful and largely unknown to the rest of the world.

Then everything changed!

In the summer of 1897, word began to spread that there was gold in the Klondike.

Almost overnight, thousands of men, and a few determined women, became convinced that fortune was waiting for them in the Yukon.

By 1898, Skagway had exploded into a bustling boomtown of nearly 10,000 residents, briefly becoming the largest city in Alaska.

They came chasing gold.

What they didn't realize was that before they could find gold, they would have to survive one of the most difficult journeys in North American history in one of the most desolate places on earth.

For some, it would mean everything. For others, it would cost them their lives.

The adventure began long before they reached Skagway. Prospectors crowded on to steamships departing from Seattle and San Francisco. There weren't enough ships to meet the demand, and those that sailed were often packed beyond capacity. Conditions were miserable. Yet every passenger believed that wealth waited at the journey and it would be worth it all.

Arrival At Skagway

Many had spent everything they had just getting there. Their plan was simple:

Reality had other ideas.

Upon arriving, they learned about the Canadian government's One-Ton Supply Rule.

The Canadian Mounted Police understood the wilderness these prospectors were about to enter. They knew the brutal winters, the isolation, and the dangers awaiting them. They also knew that most of the newcomers had absolutely no idea what they were getting themselves into. And they didn't want to be responsible for that.

Before anyone could cross into Canada and continue toward the gold fields, they had to prove they carried enough food and supplies to survive for an entire year.

That meant transporting roughly 1,000-2,000 lbs. of food and equipment over the mountains without a horse, sled, or wagon. The only thing they had was brute force. Those who tried the horse quickly realized that the animals were no match for the trail ahead.

The route over the Chilkoot Pass stretched approximately 35 miles. A strong man could carry only 50 to 65 pounds at a time. To move a full year's worth of supplies, prospectors had to carry a load to the summit, leave it there, climb back down, retrieve another load, and repeat the process.

Some made the trip more than 30 times.

Imagine climbing a mountain carrying sixty pounds on your back.

Now imagine doing it over and over for weeks.

That's the reality of the Gold Rush.

The final challenge was the most infamous part of the journey.

The summit: The pass rises to 3,525 feet above sea level. The final half-mile gains nearly 1,000 feet in elevation. It was so steep that horses couldn't climb it. But some were determined to make them try. Thousands of animals died from exhaustion, starvation, and injury along nearby routes, giving rise to the haunting name, "Dead Horse Trail."

How did the They get to the Top?

They carved "The Golden Stairs."

They carved approximately 1,500 steps directly into the ice and snow and climbed each step.

Men climbed them single file, one behind another, carrying heavy packs on their backs. The line often stretched for miles. If you stepped out of line to rest, it could take hours to rejoin the procession.

And after finally reaching the summit?

You had to go back down and do it all over again. Not one, not twice but at least 30 times. Get that stair master out now and start training....

Only after conquering the Golden Stairs could they finally begin the next stage of their journey toward the gold fields. And believe it or not, the adventure was still far from over. But that's a story for another day.

Whenever I visit Skagway, I find myself asking a simple question:

Would I have been willing to work that hard for the chance of gold?

I'm honestly not sure.

Later in 1898, it became clear that a better route was needed. Construction began on what would become one of the greatest accomplishmenets of times. The White Pass & Yukon Route Railroad.

Today, that same narrow-gauge railroad is still operating, which means you can experience part of this incredible journey for yourself.

As the train climbs through the mountains, you'll cross bridges suspended above deep gorges, pass waterfalls tumbling down rocky cliffs, and often see patches of snow even during the summer months.

You'll travel in comfort where thousands once struggled on foot.

You'll look down into the valley known as Dead Horse Trail and imagine the end of the line of prospectors carrying their year's worth of supplies up the mountain.

You'll see the same rugged landscape they saw. The same peaks. The same cliffs. The same unforgiving wilderness.

And as you sit comfortably in your railcar, watching the breathtaking scenery unfold outside your window, take a moment to remember the people who came before you.

The men and women who sacrificed comfort, safety, and sometimes even their lives for a small chance at gold.

Because in Skagway, the gold rush isn't just history. It's a story of courage—a story of determination.

And a reminder of what ordinary people are capable of when they are willing to chase an extraordinary dream.

The Greatest Treasures of Juneau were never Gold

When most people visit Junea u, they come looking for glaciers, whales, and breathtaking mountain scenery. What many don't realize is that the story of Juneau began with a man who knew these mountains long before the city existed.

His name was Chief Kowee.

Long before cruise ships filled the harbor and visitors from around the world arrived to experience Alaska, the Tlingit people called this region home. They traveled these waterways, hunted these forests, and lived among these mountains for generations. They knew the land in ways outsiders could not.

It was 1880. The rain fell softly against the mountains as three men made their way through the wilderness of Southeast Alaska. Towering spruce trees surrounded them. Streams rushed down from snow-covered peaks. The air smelled of earth, cedar, and saltwater.

For two of the men, the journey had become frustrating. They were wet, tired, and cold.

Joe Juneau and Richard Harris had come north searching for one thing. GOLD! They had heard the stories of shiny rocks and veins of gold stretching as far as one could see. They knew it was hidden somewhere in the vast forest, but they weren't sure how, in such a big land as Alaska, to find it. Mountains stretched endlessly; valleys disappeared into dense forests. Every direction seemed to hold another obstacle.

Leading them was a Tlingit chief named Kowee.

Unlike the other men, he wasn't a stranger to this land. These forests were familiar to him. These rivers and mountains were not obstacles to overcome but part of a landscape he understood deeply.

The land spoke to him. They weren't obstacles; they were a part of daily life.

He led the men farther and farther into the forest, and even as Joe Juneau and Richard Harris got more and more discouraged after continuing step after step. Mile after mile and day after day, they made a discovery. They found GOLD!

This discovery would change everything. Word spread quickly. Miners arrived. Businesses opened. Families settled in the area. A community began to grow where there had once been only wilderness. The settlement would become the city of Juneau, and yes, it was named after Joe Juneau; yet the people who visit Juneau today don't go for the gold. They go for something far more valuable.

Today, visitors arrive by cruise ship and airplane instead of on foot. Hotels stand where prospectors once camped. Shops line streets that didn't exist when Kowee guided those men into the mountains. Yet while those men were searching for gold they were walking through a landscape that held a treasure far older than anything hidden beneath the ground.

Mendenhall Glacier

Long before Juneau became a city or prospectors searched for gold snow was falling high in the mountains. Year after year, century after century the weight of that snow compressed into ice. Slowly, almost imperceptibly, the ice began to move. Not over days, or years but over thousands of years.

The glacier carved valleys, shaped mountains, and helped create the landscape that would eventually welcome those prospectors searching for gold.

When I visit Juneau and stand before Mendenhall Glacier, I see a river of ice. The color of blue that I've never seen before. I see something that seems permanent yet is far from permanent. It is ever-changing. It is a river of ice slowly moving towards the sea. One day, that glacier won't be there anymore. The glacier has already changed in the years that I have been going there. It no longer touches the water. It is no longer a tidewater glacier.

As I stand and look at the glacier and think about the prospectors searching for something permanent, I am reminded that everything is ever-changing and am given a new perspective of gratitude and wonder and a renewed appreciation for being allowed to stand before God's creation.

More than 140 years ago, Chief Kowee guided t wo prospectors toward something valuable hidden in these mountains. Today, Juneau continues to guide visitors toward its own treasures. Not treasure you can carry in your pocket. Treasure you can carry home in your heart. It's not just a story of a city built because of gold. It's the story of a place where people can connect with God.

What Made Ketchikan What is Today?

The History of Ketchikan

Ketchikan is easy to admire for its beauty. But long before cruise ships and souvenir shops arrived, this small town lived through stories that shaped all of Alaska. Stories of survival, power, greed, resilience, and reinvention that have made Ketchikan what it is today and the people who shaped it into what we love. So what made Ketchikan the place it is today. Salmon.

The story begins with a man name Snow. While little is known about him, we know that he recognized that the salmon in Ketchikan could provide him with the food and income to sustain life for him and his family. He created the first salmon saltery in Ketchikan.

Then came Mike Martin in 1883. He purchased 160 acres of land from Chief Kyan of the Tongass Tlingit and began building. He saw that the Salmon could not only sustain life for one person but also sustain life and income for everybody in Ketchikan.

The Salmon that Built Ketchikan

Every Salmon begins its life in freshwater streams like Ketchikan Creek. Tiny eggs rest safely beneath gravel beds until they hatch into young fish called fry. These salmon spend months, and sometimes years, in freshwater before heading out to sea.

Once they reach the Pacific Ocean, they begin an incredible journey. Salmon can travel thousands of miles through Alaska's coastal waters, growing stronger and larger as they mature.

Then comes one of nature's greatest miracles.

Using an instinct scientists still don't fully understand, salmon return to the exact creek where they were born. They battle strong currents, leap over obstacles, and push themselves to exhaustion to reach their spawning grounds.

What many people don't realize is that by the time salmon return to freshwater, their bodies have undergone incredible changes. During their years in the ocean, they adapt to living in saltwater. Their kidneys, gills, and bodies become specialized in a marine environment. As they begin their journey back upstream, they stop eating entirely and rely on stored energy reserves.

This transition back into freshwater triggers a series of dramatic biological changes. Their bodies begin to break down as they focus every remaining ounce of energy on reproduction. Their immune systems weaken, their organs deteriorate, and they become physically exhausted from the journey. By the time they have laid their eggs or fertilized them, their life cycle is complete.

While this cycle sounds sad, it is critical. The nutrients from their bodies feed bears, eagles, otters, insects, forests, and even future generations of salmon. Scientists have found that the nutrients carried inland by spawning salmon help support entire ecosystems throughout Southeast Alaska. In many ways, the forests surrounding Ketchikan owe part of their existence to the salmon that return home each year.

The Ancient Rivers of Ice that Shape the Last Frontier

There are a few places on earth where you can stand in complete silence and hear the earth moving.

In Alaska, glaciers are not just scenery. They are living, moving forces of nature that have carved mountains, shaped coastlines, created fjords, and transformed the landscape for millions of years. They are enormous, ancient, beautiful, and surprisingly alive.

For many travelers, seeing a glacier becomes the emotional highlight of an Alaska trip. Pictures never prepare you for the sheer scale. You may be a mile away and still feel close enough to touch it. The color, the sound, the size, and the raw power are overwhelming in the best possible way.

Whether you're planning an Alaska cruise or a land journey, understanding glaciers makes seeing them even more incredible.

What exactly is a glacier?

A glacier is essentially a massive river of ice that forms slowly over time from layers of compressed snow.

But unlike the ice cubes in the freezer, glacial ice is ancient. Some of Alaska's glaciers contain snow that fell hundreds or even thousands of years ago.

Glaciers form in places where more snow falls in winter than melts during summer. Over time, the weight of new snowfall compresses the older snow underneath it.

Snowfall accumulates.

Fresh snow falls year after year in high mountain regions where temperatures remain cold enough for snow to survive through summer.

2. Snow Compresses into Firn.

As layers build up, the snow beneath becomes denser and grainier. This partially compressed snow is called firn .

3. Firn Becomes Glacial Ice.

Over decades or centuries, pressure squeezes out air pockets. The ice crystals become tightly packed into dense glacier ice.

4. Gravity Makes the Glacier Move.

Once the ice mass becomes heavy enough, gravity slowly pulls it downhill. That movement is what makes a glacier a glacier. Some glaciers move only inches per year. Others can move several feet per day.

Why are Glaciers Blue?

The blue appears because dense glacial ice absorbs all colors of sunlight except blue. Blue wavelengths reflect to your eyes while the rest are absorbed deep within the ice. The purer and denser the ice, the bluer it appears. That brilliant blue color often becomes visible where glaciers crack, calve, or expose freshly compressed ice.

Glaciers are constantly changing:

They crack, shift, melt, grow, grind rock, and release enormous chunks of ice into the ocean calle d calving .
They shape the landscape around them. They carve valleys, create fjords, grind mountains into sediment, and leave behind lakes and glaciers.
The sediment they leave behind gives these lakes the beautiful milky colors.

Two Types of Glaciers:

Tidewater Glaciers. - These glaciers flow directly into the ocean. This is where dramatic calving events with giant chunks of ice crashing into the water. These are commonly visited on Alaska cruises, especially in Glacier Bay National Park.
Land Glaciers. - These glaciers remain on land and are often explored by hiking, helicopter tours, dog sledding excursions, or scenic drives.

Alaska's Big Five!

One of the biggest reasons that Alaska feels so untouched and raw is the wildlife.

You don't just visit Alaska. One of the ways you experience Alaska is through the wildlife. One moment, you are watching a humpback whale breach beside your ship. The next moment, you are staring in awe at a brown bear pulling salmon from the icy river while bald eagles are circling overhead.

Wildlife in Alaska isn't hidden in zoos and behind fences; it's everywhere and a part of everyday life.

In Africa, you go on safaris to see the "Big Five": lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, and cape buffalo. In Alaska, you can see their "Big Five," which include Moose, Grizzly bears, Caribou, gray wolves, and Dall sheep.

While the list of wildlife you see in Alaska is quite long, including: Sea otters, harbor seals, Orcas, Dall sheep, black bears, wolves, mountain goats, puffins, sea lions, foxes, lynx, porcupine, Sitka black-tailed deer, snowshoe hares, beluga whales, arctic musk ox, and wolverines.

The Big Five

Grizzly Bear

Brown Bears are the symbol of the Alaska wilderness. They are incredibly intelligent animals with an amazing memory and a sense of smell estimated to be thousands of times stronger than humans'.

During summer salmon runs, bears can eat up to 90 pounds of food per day while preparing for hibernation. The giant hump on their shoulders is actually pure muscle, giving them incredible digging and lifting power.

Despite their size, brown bears can move shockingly fast and quietly. Watching one fish in a river is one of the most unforgettable wildlife experiences in Alaska.

Kodiak Bears are among the largest bears in the world.
Bears can smell food from miles away
They hibernate for up to 7 months.
Cubs stay with their mothers for 2-3 years learning survival skills.
Salmon is critical to their ecosystem and nutrition.
Adults males can weigh up to 1500 pounds and tand over 10 feet tall.

Moose

Moose are often the animal visitors underestimate the most, until they see one in person.

A bull moose can weigh nearly as much as a small car. Their long legs help them move through deep snow, marshes, and lakes with ease. Moose are also surprisingly strong swimmers and can dive underwater to eat aquatic plants.

In fall, male moose enter the rutting season where they battle for dominance using antler that can weight 40 pounds.

Dall Sheep

Dall sheep are one of Alaska's most unique mountain animals. Their bright white coats stand out dramatically against the dark, rocky cliffs. These sheep live high in rugged mountain terrain where few predators can safely follow. Their specially designed hooves act almost like climbing shoes, allowing them to navigate cliffs with incredible agility.

Male Dall sheep, called rams, grow massive, curled horns that continue to grow throughout their lives. During mating season, rams battle by charging into each other headfirst, creating crashes that echo through the mountains. Dall sheep are also known for their incredible eyesight and ability to spot danger from long distances.

Gray Wolf

Gray wolves are one of the rarest and most exciting wildlife sightings in Alaska. They are intelligent, social, and essential to Alaska's ecosystem. Wolves live in packs that function like close family units, often led by a breeding pair, and they work together to hunt, protect territory, and raise pups. They communicate through howls, body language, facial expressions, and scent marking, with howls carrying across Alaska's valleys and tundra.

Alaska wolves are generally larger than wolves in the lower 48 states because of the harsher climate and the availability of larger prey. They can travel over 30 miles in a single day while hunting caribou, moose, or smaller animals. Wolves are incredibly adaptable and survive everywhere from dense forests to Arctic tundra. Seeing one in the wild is considered very lucky because they naturally avoid humans and blend remarkably well into Alaska's vast wilderness.

Caribou are highly social animals that rely on the herd's protection and instincts to survive predators such as wolves and bears. During migration season, thousands can move together across mountains, rivers, and tundra in an almost endless line stretching across the landscape. For many Alaska Native cultures, caribou have provided food, clothing, tools, and tradition for generations, making them not only important wildlife but also deeply connected to Alaska's history and way of life.

So many times I am asked "When is the best time to visit Alaska?"

That is such a hard question to answer. Why? Because it really depends on what you want to see and experience. Each season is different with different experiences. So, the answer to this question is hard but simple. Once we know what you want to experience then it's easy to answer that question.

I am a travel advisor who specializes in Alaska. I have traveled to almost all the regions and have experienced different seasons. I have traveled with Royal Carribbean, Holland America, and Princess Cruise Lines. Each experience was different and each experience was amazing. I don't necessarily have a favorite because I want to experience all of Alaska.

Understanding the seasons can make a difference in helping your experience meet your expectations.

Weather by Region

Spring in Alaska

Spring creeps into Alaska slowly and steadily. It starts with "break-up". This is when the ice on the rivers begins to crack and break apart. Then the wildlife begins to wake up, and they are hungry. They began traveling to find food. The crowds remain light.

This is the season of Beginnings:

Summer in Alaska

Summer is peak season in Alaska. Everything is awake and active. The cruise ships are coming in. The float planes are buzzing by. The whales are jumping.
